The Emerald Coast Science Center has a long history of helping local families learn about science. The organization first opened its doors as the FOCUS Center in 1989. It became a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 1992. It partnered with Okaloosa County Schools to provide lab-based activities for local school children. 

The center has a variety of hands-on exhibits and exotic animals. There are also special events and programs to keep everyone entertained. For example, it hosts a planetarium night, Creature Features, and Discover Science Saturdays. The Emerald Coast Science Center is also home to the SMALLab, a state-of-the-art computer lab for teaching science to children. This room is one of only three in the country.
